Why Drainage Holes are Important

Drainage holes are essential in planters to prevent water accumulation at the bottom, which can lead to root rot and other plant diseases. Proper drainage ensures that excess water exits the planter, keeping your plants healthy and thriving.

Preparing to Drill

Our planters are constructed of materials that allow you to easily create drainage holes. This process can be followed for fiberglass planters.

  • Sharp object (such as an ice pick) for making an indentation.
  • Drill with sharp drill bits suitable for fiberglass.
  • Small block or piece of wood.
  • Protective eyewear and gloves.
Fiberglass Planter Preparation

Step-by-Step Guide to Drilling Holes

  1. Mark the Spot: With a sharp object (like an ice pick), make an indentation where you want to drill. This prevents your drill bit from wandering and potentially scratching the surface of your fiberglass planter.
  2. Support the Planter: Place a small block or piece of wood on the inside of the planter under the drilling spot. This reduces potential splintering of the fiberglass when opening the hole.
  3. Drill a Pilot Hole: With a standard drill bit, drill a small pilot hole smaller than the finished hole you are planning to drill. Use a slow speed to reduce chipping and do not apply pressure; let the drill bit do the work.
  4. Chamfer the Edge: Drill a chamfer-edged hole the size you wish your final hole to be. The chamfer should have an edge-slope of approximately 1/16 of an inch. Run your chamfer bit at a slow speed without applying pressure.
  5. Enlarge the Hole: Drill your final hole using a sharp, clean drill bit—step bits are recommended, but standard drill bits can be used. Again, drill at a slow speed without applying pressure. Ensure the drill is perpendicular to the surface so the bit cuts exactly at the edges of the chamfer.
  6. Finish Up: Take your time to do this right. Although it may seem tedious, drilling a perfectly clean hole will ensure your planters last a very long time.

Planter Care and Maintenance

Your planter requires little maintenance, but there are a few things you can do to keep it looking like new:

  • Wash with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth as needed.
  • Do not wash with steel wool or any other materials that may scratch your planter.
  • You may also wax your planter if you desire a high polish or glossy look. Clean your planter very well before waxing for the best results.
  • Color finish touch-up kits are available for small chips or scratches.
